Highwood Public Library Friends of the Library

WHO ARE THE FRIENDS?

The Highwood Library offers our community many invaluable services including story time, book discussions, summer reading programs for kids, as well as child and adult literacy-focused programming. The Friends of The Highwood Public Library supports quality library services through advocacy, fundraising, and volunteering in ways that promote the policies and long-range plan of the library. We are a volunteer organization interested in supporting, improving, and expanding literacy-focused library services and resources at the Highwood Public Library.

Friends work to ensure that the public has equal access to information, both as a constitutional right and as the best way to sustain a democratic way of life. Friends recognize that authority rests with the whole Friends’ board as assembled in public meetings, and shall make no personal statements or promises, nor take any private action which may compromise the board or the library. Friends support the actions taken by a majority of the board and clearly differentiate personal opinions from board decisions. Friends serve as advocates for local, state, and national library issues, and represent the library when meeting legislators and funders. Friends are open and welcoming to suggestions, questions and communications from the library staff, trustee board members, and the public.

OUR MISSION IS TO:

  • Support the Highwood Public Library
  • Focus public attention on library services, facilities, and needs
  • Promote the welfare and growth of the library
  • Receive and encourage gifts and bequests to the library

WHAT DO FRIENDS DO?

  • They help fund educational opportunities for our patrons that the library would not otherwise be able to offer
  • They support library programs by raising funds for performers, supplies, and prizes
  • They raise money for items not in the regular library budget
  • They provide critical volunteering support at events
